  19. <p>    This fall the moviegoer has a choice of two Black Rains set
  20. in Japan, but they're not hard to tell apart. One is Shohei
  21. Imamura's stark meditation on Hiroshima 1945. The other is a cop
  22. movie backed by some heavy Hollywood artillery: the producers
  23. of Fatal Attraction. Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia are two New
  24. York City detectives on the trail of a cool, vicious Japanese
  25. gangster (Yusaku Matsuda). Their contact in the Osaka
  26. constabulary is a by-the-book gent (Ken Takakura) affronted by
  27. Douglas' bullying. You've seen this picture before; last year
  28. it was called Red Heat. "Theft is theft -- there is no gray
  29. area," Takakura observes, and Douglas ripostes, "New York is one
  30. big gray area."
  31. </p>
  32. <p>    There are no gray areas in Ridley Scott movies; the
  33. director of Blade Runner tosses color and atmosphere into every
  34. shot. The man has never photographed a dry sidewalk in his life;
  35. the tiles have got to glisten like Bakelite in heat. Neon glyphs
  36. snake around each lurid shop sign. An ominous bike boy threads
  37. his Suzuki around columns in a Japanese mall-cathedral.
  38. </p>
  39. <p>    Is this the pinnacle of Scott's luscious style or a parody
  40. of it? Maybe it's the spectacle of a director running for
  41. cover. Scott's last hit was Alien, a decade ago; these days his
  42. brother Tony directs the blockbusters (Top Gun, Beverly Hills
  43. Cop II). So Black Rain catches a gifted imagist between
  44. inspirations, biding his time without quite wasting ours.
